CMAP Awards Ceremony. This event honours the achievements of County Cork’s Martial Artists. World champions receive 8 awards, 8 honoured guests do
presentations, speech by County Mayor.
*****
Leonard Coughlan, Kinsale, the founder of CMAP runs an academy of Tae Kwon Do Schools, in Bandon and Mahon. He created CMAP because he saw a need to
celebrate the achievements of our Cork Martial Artists. Towards his vision of uniting and promoting Cork martial arts clubs and associations, he works tirelessly to
applaud the hard work and discipline required of successful participants. The CMAP Award for ‘coach of the year’ is in its 4th cycle, but with an additional 7 awards this
year, 2013 marks the increasing number of people willing to support each other, and work together, in this sporting community. Leonard has seen first-hand how
involvement in these sports disciplines has shaped lives for the better, and how one success story can inspire another, or how one coach can have a positive effect on
so many lives. Discipline, respect for ourselves and others, hard work, determination, these are the lessons to be learnt along with the skills and physical abilities
taught in his schools, and in this sports world in general. Leonard’s nephew Ben Coughlan. Kinsale, the boxing coach at the academy, completed his training with a
certificate in psychology and sociology, because that is the holistic way in which these coaches work.
The CMAP motto is "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”
Councillor Barbara Murray, Mayor of the County of Cork will make an opening speech; award winners are county wide.
Further special guests, public figures and dignitaries will be present on the night. So far confirmed for presenting awards are *The 4th ranked worldwide Champion
Boxer-Gary ‘Spike’ O’ Sullivan, *Professional show jumper-Seán Kelly. *Cllr. Kieran McCarthy.
The city is also well represented in the recipients, with club of the year the Siam Warriors on Blarney St. and the lifetime achievement award recipient, Abe McCarthy in
Mayfield.

Abe McCarthy, Mayfield, says of the Lifetime Achievement award, “This is new to me, I’m surprised, and I almost didn’t accept, because why me, there are plenty of
worthy recipients, who I’m sure will be asking me the same question. The biggest thing for me is that I really admire what Leonard Coughlan, is trying to do with
CMAP, and he has a tough job ahead of him, so I want to show my support. If he can unite the many different martial arts groups in one body he’ll go down in history.
To unite all these people, to bond together the different associations in Cork, well it would be a wonderful achievement.”
Lily De La Cour, Junior Competitor of the year, Bantry, says of the award “I’m really honoured and privileged to be receiving this award, as it really recognises the hard
work and effort put in by my coach, myself and my supporters over all the years of kick-boxing. “
